Dimitris Bilidas

Intro:

Hi! My name is Δημήτρης (formally:Δημήτριος) Μπηλίδας. According to ISO 843 TR, the romanized version of my name is Dimitris (formally: Dimitrios) Bilidas. Here you can mostly find information about my academic and research activities.

Whois

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the AI group and MADgIK lab at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, working with Prof. Manolis Koubarakis.

My research is in the area of Artificial Intelligence (Knowledge Representation and Reasoning) and Databases, focusing on efficient techniques for Semantic Web data processing. I am keen on combining theoretical results with practical systems and applying them in real world use cases. I have extensive research experience in several national and european research projects. I am also a member of the Hellenic Association of Artificial Intelligence.

Education

Work and Research Experience

In 2006, while doing my undergraduate thesis in the SKEL lab of NSCR Demokritos, I started working on the national research project Xenios, work that continued in the three-year FP6 research project INDIGO, under the supervision of Vangelis Karkaletsis. My work was relevant to developing the ELEON authoring tool, a tool for allowing the user to develop OWL ontologies and enrich them with lingustic data and target user preference values, in order to be provided as input to a personalized natural language generation engine. As a continuation of this work, for the internal RoboSKEL project, I also developed a dialogue system that was utilizing the previously mentioned components.

For 9 months, starting from September 2011, I was working on cyber security and cyber defence issues in the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, as part of my obligatory military service.

In 2012 I started working in National and Kapodistrian University of Athens under the supervision of Prof. Koubarakis in the 4-year FP7 project Optique, developing techniques for Ontology-Based data access (OBDA) distributed query execution over federated data sources, succesfully deployed in the Statoil Optique use-case. More recently, I started working on parallel and distributed execution of geospatial RDF queries for the Copernicus App Lab and ExtremeEarth european projects.
