Report on the St. Thomas Workshop

The first workshop of the WG 6.3 took place in Sugar Bay Hotel, St. Thomas, January 23-24, 1995. There were 21 participants, which is about 40% of the working group's membership. Each participant presented a paper. The workshop was a great success: good presentations in a friendly and constructive environment.

Following the workshop, the group held a business meeting. Below are extracts of the minutes of this meeting, which we believe are of interest to TC6.

The next WG 7.3 PERFORMANCE conference will be held in 1997 in Switzerland. The main organizer is Martin Reiser. The Working Group will see how it can participate in this conference. The "LAN/MAN Communication Systems" conference was held in Kyoto in December 1994. The conference was sponsored by WG 6.4 and WG 6.3. There were about 70 participants. 45 papers were submitted, of which 25 were accepted. The proceedings will be published by Chapman & Hall. The next conference in this series will take place in 1997. Membership to the WG 6. It is open to qualified people who would like to join WG 6.3. If a person is not active in the group over a period of 2 to 3 years, he/she should be asked if he/she wishes to continue being a member. The "flagship" conference of WG 6.3 is the "Performance of communication systems" conference. The group decided not to participate with other working groups of TC6 in order to offer a joint conference on broadband communication systems, as discussed in the TC6 meeting in Kuala Lumpur. Also, it was decided that the "Performance of communication systems" conference should take place every 2 years. A WG 6.3 workshop should take place every other year (in-between successive conference years).

The group decided to produce a leaflet describing WG 6.3. Also, we will set up a homepage to be accessed from the TC6 WWW server.

The working group will sponsor a special issue of the Hungarian Journal on Communications on ATM issues. The guest editor is Tamas Henk, member of the working group. The possibility of launching a journal and in particular an electronic journal was discussed
