This tool is a cheap way to teach simple audiometry. However, before any such use is possible, the platform/headphone combination MUST be calibrated. If anyone is interested in this, please contact the author for further details.
The tool will be used by several hundred undergraduates at Sheffield in Q2 1999.
The user selects a frequency and an ear of presentation, then adjusts the level with the slider until the tone is no longer audible to the subject. The hearing level for this frequency/ear combination is then recorded. The dotted line at 20 dB HL represents 'normal' hearing. Any point below this line represents a hearing loss.
